Summary

This paper discusses Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) as a mechanism where landowners or farmers are compensated for managing their land to provide ecosystem services like water purification, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. These PES schemes are essential for sustaining environmental benefits while improving the livelihoods of landowners. The document outlines the types of ecosystem services, including provisioning, supporting, regulating, and cultural services.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, particularly SDGs 1 (poverty), 13 (climate action), and 15 (life on land), are closely linked with PES schemes. The SDGs help evaluate the effectiveness of PES programs in promoting sustainability, enhancing rural livelihoods, reducing inequality, and addressing climate change. PES schemes are positioned as vital for sustainable agricultural practices, contributing to environmental conservation and socioeconomic development.

This document emphasizes the importance of aligning PES with smart agricultural practices, sustainable development policies, and bioeconomy models to achieve long-term success. It also stresses the need for efficient governance, public policy, and financing to make these programs viable. Ultimately, PES is seen as a critical tool for balancing ecosystem preservation and improving life quality for rural communities.
