Background

This study presents financial management issues about the Foundation for Amazon Sustainability (FAS). FAS runs conservation programs in the Amazon, providing assistance and sustainable development solutions to indigenous populations and projects with multiple approaches aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Such efforts demand relevant financial funds and controlling practices to address a wide range of distinct approaches to life quality improvement for distant and sometimes isolated groups of beneficiaries, concerning funds from different sources, along with general administrative and commercial activities.

Research Question

FAS began its activities in march 2008, with the “Bolsa Floresta” (Forest Stewardship) Program, with financial resources from an endowment fund and annually secured donations. The availability of secured initial funds entailed the organization to rapidly expand the scope of projects with further income raised from new donors and partners, thus bringing multiple financial and budgetary issues to the administration in addressing all commitments with donors, partners, beneficiaries, and institutional roles. The main tasks observed in fourteen years of activities and financial management were related to the design and management of multiple budgets connected to general activities, with funds supplied by multiple sources. In this scope, the issue of transaction costs received special attention to frame intermediary and end activities.
